In case you missed this week’s Regular Board of Education meeting from October 13, 2025…

HS Representatives Gabe and Alysha reported the following:

* Homecoming was a successful weeklong event this year! Float-building was great – the sophomores won. Seniors won the spirit week theme. Chloe Connie was crowned queen; Gabe Prast was crowned king. And, our Bulldogs beat Flint Southwestern 50 to 18. Good sportsmanship, great turnout, fun pep assembly, and a successful dance.

* Many seniors took a field trip to SVSU and two students will be attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) tour over spring break.

* The NHS pumpkin decorating tradition is well under way—bids to purchase will be happening this week.

*  The start of the school year has been “heavenly and unproblematic”!

The annual finance audit was presented by Mr. Jeff Sabolish of Lewis and Knopf. We received a clean, unmodified audit opinion, which means they are reasonably sure that there are no material errors. This is the best possible outcome on a public-school audit.  It was noted that the district adopted the new accounting guidance: GASB Statement No 101, Compensated Absences. Additionally, there was a “single audit” of federal funds performed. Again, there were no findings. Ending fund balance for 2025 was 23.53%.

This is the first year that MHSAA will offer Boys Volleyball and it will run as a spring sport. Due to this being a new sport, a number of districts are opting to engage in a co-op with a nearby district to ensure enough players to make up a team, which our board voted for so that Bulldogs who want to play can. Additionally, there are a number of college scholarships available for boys who play volleyball.

The board approved the hiring of Lillian Green as a preschool associate teacher–congratulations!

Finally, we will allow second semester school of choice applicants to apply January 1-16, 2026. Watch the website www.bentleyschools.org for more information.

There was a question as to whether or not Bentley will hold classes tomorrow, and the answer is yes, Bentley will be open on Monday, September 29. This allows us to maintain students' routines, access breakfast and lunch, and seek counseling if they request it.

Dear Bentley Community,

We are so very saddened by the tragic events that occurred at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Grand Blanc earlier today. There are no words that adequately express our sincerest condolence to the victims, their families, and the broader community…it is so difficult to wrap our minds around such incomprehensible acts of violence.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff continue to be our district's top priority. While there has been no threat posed to Bentley, we work closely with the City of Burton Police Department to take all necessary precautions when threats are posed, even if the threat is not direct.

A traumatic event like this can cause distress. So, in addition to the supports being provided to the community at Genesys Athletic Club in Grand Blanc on Monday and Tuesday, our school social worker is also prepared to work with students and staff, should they want to talk to somebody.

At this time, you might also find yourself wondering the best way to approach this topic with your children. The National Association of School Psychologists has a brief article titled Talking to Children About Violence ( https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources-and-podcasts/school-safety-and-crisis/school-violence-resources/talking-to-children-about-violence-tips-for-families-and-educators ). The tips below come from the article, but truly are just highlights. Please click on the link above to understand these points better.

• Reassure children they are safe
• Validate their feelings
• Make time to talk (and listen)
• Keep your explanations developmentally appropriate (the article offers suggestions by age level)
• Limit access to television and social media attention to these events
• Correct misinformation
• Maintain a normal routine
• Talk about steps youth can take to make a positive difference

We will move forward. We are resilient. And I believe that collectively we can make a difference when we stop turning to violent rhetoric and actions when others don’t hold the same beliefs we do. Our children need us to come together and seek to understand one another, not destroy one another.

With profound sympathy and also hope for a kinder world,

Kristy Spann, PhD
Superintendent

Same as message in post, but on letterhead.
Even with a tough 17-22 loss against our rival, our Bulldogs left everything on the field tonight. They fought hard until the very end, and we couldn’t be prouder of their effort and sportsmanship.

A huge shout-out to our incredible band and cheerleaders for bringing the energy and spirit all night long! This game was about more than just the score—it was about our community coming together.

We'll get 'em next time! #GoBulldogs #Community #HighSchoolFootball

Dear Families and Staff, We know you may have seen recent headlines and media reports about the uncertainty surrounding Michigan’s state budget. Understandably, these stories may raise questions and concerns about how schools, including those here in Genesee County, could be affected. As your educational leaders, we believe it is important to provide you with clear, direct information so that you know what is happening, what it could mean for our schools, and how we can work together to advocate for the resources our students and staff need. That is why, as we begin the 2025–26 school year, we are sharing this update on behalf of the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) and the 21 public school districts across Genesee County — so you have timely information and confidence that we are monitoring these developments closely to protect our students, staff, and programs. Budget Deadline Missed By law, the State must approve a K–12 school funding budget by July 1 each year so districts can plan with certainty. This year, that deadline passed with no agreement in place. If lawmakers do not act, a state government shutdown on September 30 could delay the funding schools depend on to operate. Why This Matters • In a recent statewide survey, 89% of voters supported requiring lawmakers to pass a budget before the school year begins. • The current deadlock involves a proposal to divert dollars from the School Aid Fund — money voters were promised in 1994 would be dedicated to K–12 education — to other priorities such as road repairs. • According to the same survey, 85.7% of voters oppose using School Aid Fund dollars for fixing roads. Current Impact to Districts According to a survey released by Michigan School Business Officials, one in ten Michigan school districts has already made staffing cuts ahead of this academic year due to budget uncertainty: • 11% of districts had classroom personnel layoffs • 15% had non-classroom personnel layoffs • 42% reduced staff through attrition • 27% made non-staff spending cuts
Districts also reported delaying building maintenance, increasing workloads for staff, and raising class sizes — all of which have direct impacts on students. Future Impact on Districts If a budget is not passed, we could miss our first scheduled state aid payment on October 20, 2025. That payment is critical for: • Compensating teachers and staff who work directly with students • Maintaining class sizes and student support services • Operating buses and supplying classrooms • Funding academic programs, arts, athletics, and activities, including early childhood programs Our schools cannot operate indefinitely without these resources, or the confidence that they will be available. What Needs to Happen The solution is clear: lawmakers must approve a K–12 budget that protects the School Aid Fund for its original purpose — educating Michigan’s children. How You Can Help Please join us in urging our elected officials to act quickly. You can contact your state lawmakers with this information and share with them why timely, protected school funding matters to you and your family. • Michigan Senate https://senate.michigan.gov/ • Michigan House of Representatives https://www.house.mi.gov/Index Our students deserve a stable, fully- funded school year. Together, as a county, we can ensure their learning continues without interruption. On behalf of the Genesee Intermediate School District and the 21 public school districts of Genesee County, thank you for your partnership and support.
