In case you missed this week’s Regular Board of Education meeting…

We reviewed the bond change orders for the 2025 bond on the new preschool, which is on track to be done by the beginning of January.

Regarding the 31aa mental health funds, State and Federal lawsuits were filed regarding the language in this legislation, specifically the waiver of attorney-client privilege. Judges have agreed to render a decision by December 19 and have indicated that districts have until December 4 to opt into the funds; however, they will be able to rescind that decision by December 30 if the decisions are unfavorable. Thus, the board voted to opt in at this time.

The first reading of the second annual policy review occurred last night. The second reading will occur at the December 8th meeting.

Thursday and Friday of this week, come enjoy the Barhitte Elementary students' production of Christmas Shorts, a one-act holiday delight made up of short scenes and monologues. You’ll find everything here from kids writing letters to Santa to the big guy getting ready for Christmas himself to a bunch of elves who accidentally rip Santa’s gift bag at the last minute. (Don’t worry, Mrs. Claus can fix it!) There’s a sports segment featuring the 845th annual Reindeer Games and a holiday quiz show featuring Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the Ghost of Christmas Future. A soap opera, As the North Pole Turns, a news segment from the North Pole News, and some Christmas-themed commercials round out this fun seasonal comedy.

Enjoy the reel from tonight's dress rehearsal! And BIG shout-out to Mrs. Mohr, Mr. Mohr, and Mrs. Wilcox for making this happen!

Christmas Shorts Performances Thu, 11/20 and Fri, 11/21 at 7:00 PM at Bentley Middle School.

In case you missed this week’s Regular Board of Education meeting…

We reviewed the bond change orders for the 2025 bond on the new preschool, which is on track to be done by the beginning of January.
A proposal for 8-man football was presented by Varsity Football Coach Stabile ( https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1rrvkTgQekHhwafnkIrfvDt81VjL_VHvHSOdDyY4brOc/edit?usp=sharing ). After a thoughtful discussion, the board agreed safety and increased play time are critical for our students and that we will move to 8-man football for the 2026-27 school year.

We are waiting for more information regarding the 31aa mental health funds that the state budgeted before deciding whether to accept them or not. There are two troubling aspects to the law as written: how a mass casualty incident is defined and the waiver of attorney-client privilege. The board completely agrees that in the event of any incident, an investigation should be completed. However, the way the law is currently written exposes the district and broader community to unintended consequences. This link to an article in Bridge Michigan yesterday explains the issue ( https://bridgemi.com/talent-education/michigan-has-321m-for-school-safety-the-catch-districts-must-waive-rights/ ). Our board will take action at the next meeting on November 24.

After completing the pupil accounting reporting for the state, it was determined that our student enrollment decreased by 20 students and that conservative calculations put our current fund balance at 10%.
As we prepare to move forward with the research-based suicide prevention program Hope Squad at Bentley High School, it was recommended and approved to add a Hope Squad advisor to Schedule B of the teachers’ collective bargaining agreement through a Memorandum of Understanding.

Recognizing the need for clear processes and protocols across the district–for staff and families–a decision was made to move forward with Cariina, a platform that will allow us to make forms easily accessible to all, will allow for each individual to follow their requests through the process, and receive confirmation of approval (where approval was sought). This platform will allow people to access forms and complete them online via computer or via an app. And, eventually, it will allow families to make payments, such as for fundraisers or Chromebook repairs, through the app.

Dear Families and Staff, We know you may have seen recent headlines and media reports about the uncertainty surrounding Michigan’s state budget. Understandably, these stories may raise questions and concerns about how schools, including those here in Genesee County, could be affected. As your educational leaders, we believe it is important to provide you with clear, direct information so that you know what is happening, what it could mean for our schools, and how we can work together to advocate for the resources our students and staff need. That is why, as we begin the 2025–26 school year, we are sharing this update on behalf of the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) and the 21 public school districts across Genesee County — so you have timely information and confidence that we are monitoring these developments closely to protect our students, staff, and programs. Budget Deadline Missed By law, the State must approve a K–12 school funding budget by July 1 each year so districts can plan with certainty. This year, that deadline passed with no agreement in place. If lawmakers do not act, a state government shutdown on September 30 could delay the funding schools depend on to operate. Why This Matters • In a recent statewide survey, 89% of voters supported requiring lawmakers to pass a budget before the school year begins. • The current deadlock involves a proposal to divert dollars from the School Aid Fund — money voters were promised in 1994 would be dedicated to K–12 education — to other priorities such as road repairs. • According to the same survey, 85.7% of voters oppose using School Aid Fund dollars for fixing roads. Current Impact to Districts According to a survey released by Michigan School Business Officials, one in ten Michigan school districts has already made staffing cuts ahead of this academic year due to budget uncertainty: • 11% of districts had classroom personnel layoffs • 15% had non-classroom personnel layoffs • 42% reduced staff through attrition • 27% made non-staff spending cuts
Districts also reported delaying building maintenance, increasing workloads for staff, and raising class sizes — all of which have direct impacts on students. Future Impact on Districts If a budget is not passed, we could miss our first scheduled state aid payment on October 20, 2025. That payment is critical for: • Compensating teachers and staff who work directly with students • Maintaining class sizes and student support services • Operating buses and supplying classrooms • Funding academic programs, arts, athletics, and activities, including early childhood programs Our schools cannot operate indefinitely without these resources, or the confidence that they will be available. What Needs to Happen The solution is clear: lawmakers must approve a K–12 budget that protects the School Aid Fund for its original purpose — educating Michigan’s children. How You Can Help Please join us in urging our elected officials to act quickly. You can contact your state lawmakers with this information and share with them why timely, protected school funding matters to you and your family. • Michigan Senate https://senate.michigan.gov/ • Michigan House of Representatives https://www.house.mi.gov/Index Our students deserve a stable, fully- funded school year. Together, as a county, we can ensure their learning continues without interruption. On behalf of the Genesee Intermediate School District and the 21 public school districts of Genesee County, thank you for your partnership and support.
