✈️ Paper Airplane Showdown! ✈️
Mrs. Roland's 3rd graders went head-to-head with Mrs. Leonard's 5th graders in an epic Paper Airplane Flying Contest!
Before the competition, our 3rd graders put their research skills to work, investigating what makes a paper airplane fly farther, stay in the air longer, and soar straighter. They tested designs, made improvements, and came ready to compete!
Meanwhile, Mrs. Leonard's 5th graders dug deep into their memories and brought back the paper airplane skills they learned two years ago when they were in 3rd grade. It was amazing to see what they remembered and how their experience helped them in the challenge.
The bus loop was filled with excitement, friendly competition, and lots of impressive flights as students put science, engineering, and problem-solving skills into action.
Who won? Let's just say there were some very impressive pilots in both grades! 🚀
Way to go, Bulldogs! Learning + teamwork + a little friendly competition = a fantastic day!

It was a perfect day for the annual walking field trip to the fire station. Thanks to our awesome Burton Firefighters for teaching our Kindergartners how to be safe and making it fun.
Today our Kindergartners learned that if you use shaving cream learning (writing sight words, names, shapes...) and even cleaning are fun!

Today our Kindergartners had a lesson led by an educator from Longway Planetarium on what living things need. They were each able to plant seeds and give those seeds everything they need to grow. Now we wait...

Instead of just talking about recycling, they put it into action with a school-wide Book Swap Project focused on the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle! ♻️✨
Students brought in gently loved books from home, earned “book bucks,” and swapped them for new-to-them stories to enjoy. Thanks to the incredible support from our school families and staff, hundreds of books were given a second life instead of sitting on shelves or being thrown away!
Not only did we help the Earth, but we also helped spread the love of reading throughout Barhitte Elementary. Watching students excitedly search for their next book was the best part of all! 💚📖
A huge thank you to everyone who donated books and helped make this project such a success. Our kiddos learned that even small acts can make a BIG difference for our planet! 🌍

After 21 days of learning, researching, observing, and (not-so-patiently) waiting… our chicks have finally started to hatch—and it has been nothing short of AMAZING!
The excitement in our classroom is through the roof as students watch this incredible life cycle happen right before their eyes. From candling the eggs and spotting movement inside, to hearing those first tiny peeps and seeing cracks appear… every moment has been filled with curiosity, wonder, and pure joy.
This hands-on experience has truly brought science to life, and the kids have done such a wonderful job caring for and learning about our feathered friends. 💛🐥
A huge THANK YOU to 4-H for giving us this incredible opportunity—we are so grateful! We also loved sharing this journey with Mrs. Doyle’s 4th grade class, who had their own incubator and chicks hatching right alongside us. 🐣💫
We can’t wait to continue watching them grow!

🤟✨ That’s a wrap for ASL Club! ✨🤟
Yesterday was the final meeting of our Barhitte Elementary ASL Club, and what an incredible journey it has been! Our students have worked so hard, learned so much, and had a whole lot of fun along the way.
Mrs. Roland is so incredibly proud of each and every one of them—their dedication, growth, and willingness to try something new has been amazing to watch. This group made every Wednesday so much fun, and it’s been such a joy learning and signing together! 💛
From learning new signs each week to building confidence and communication skills, it has been wonderful to see how far they’ve come.
We are so proud of them and already looking forward to another great year of ASL Club!

Students will work with the Wilderness Inquiry team to experience their local waterways in a whole new way. They will be paddling in 24-foot handmade Voyageur canoes and learning how riverways play an important role in our history. On land, the students will work with For-Mar nature educators to learn about fishing and meet animals that call our rivers home! All gear is provided, and no experience is necessary. Come dressed for the weather.

Canoemobile Festival

In case you missed this week’s Regular Board of Education meeting…
* The Board discussed the possibility of the City of Burton beginning a youth advisory board, composed of several students from each of the three public school districts. The Board likes the idea of increasing communication between the City and the school districts as well as providing our youth the opportunity to work with other youth from across the city, refining their voice and increasing their agency.
* The proposed policy updates were read for the second time.
* The Bentley Community Resource Fair will be Wednesday, June 10 from 4:30-6:30 PM with the generous support of Genesee County Community Mental Health Millage funds. The theme of the event is Unplug and Play. We will be providing dinner to those who come; there will be an inflatable obstacle course and numerous give-aways; and importantly, there will be access to numerous community resources for mental and physical health. It will be the perfect way to launch summer!
* Shelley Wooley of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) presented the possible placement of a Career Tech Education lab at one of the buildings donated by McLaren Health. The goal of the SME Education Foundation is to bridge the existing manufacturing community with the education community. They start with a regional market analysis and workforce needs assessment – what can the school offer and what jobs are needed. They use that information to determine the best manufacturing pathway to help the school develop: industrial maintenance, machining and fabrication, mechatronics/robotics, and welding. They have served 12K students in grades 9-12 and are in 133 schools, across 27 states. They help with the funding to provide the machines, curriculum, and professional learning for the teachers. The district pays for the teachers and provides the space. It’s an exciting opportunity for our students and the broader community.

We are ending our month long study of animal characteristics and classification with non-fiction book animal reports
As part of their animal study, our Kindergartners had a visit from the ForMar teachers to learn about animal habitats
Barhitte is finishing up another semester of fun (don't tell them, but it's learning too😇) in game clubs!
